The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot has officially found its cast, with The Hollywood Reporter today revealing that Camila Mendes (Riverdale) and Madelyn Cline (Outer Banks, Stranger Things) will lead the modern take on the 90s slasher.
THR also reveal that Tony Award nominee Sarah Pidgeon, Atlanta’s Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King, who played Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, are also in negotiations, with returning stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. also in talks reprising their roles from the initial movie.
The reboot is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) from a screenplay she co-wrote with Sam Lansky after an initial script from Leah McKendrick.
In the original film, four young friends are stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident in which they supposedly killed a man.
Two sequels, 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer followed, with Amazon Studios releasing an I Know What You Did Last Summer television series in 2021.
Plot details for the upcoming reboot are still under wraps, but according to THR:
The model for the new take is the 2022 Scream reboot, which saw members of the original cast mix it up with a cast of young up-and-comers, which in that case included Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera. It also follows a studio strategy of trying to build a next generation of stars, as seen with the Sydney Sweeney-Glen Powell rom-com Anyone but You.
Considering the original I Know What You Did Last Summer surpassed $72 million at the box office ($142 million today), the reboot has some big shoes to fill.
Sony Pictures has set a suitably summery release date for July 18, 2025. We’ll see you there.
