I Know What You Did Last Summer is coming back to a theater near you. When? Rather appropriately, next summer. Indeed, Sony Pictures has set a release date for the forthcoming reboot of the classic โ90s slasher franchise. Mark your calendars as the film is now due to arrive on July 18, 2025, per The Hollywood Reporter. Plan accordingly.ย
The latest entry in the franchise, which we first learned about early last year, is directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), working from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (Scrambled). Little is known about the film but it is expected to take place in the same universe as the original. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were said to be in talks to return at one point. Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen. No word yet on who else might star. With the release date locked in, one imagines production will begin very soon. That being the case, we should expect to learn more sooner rather than later.ย
On that July 18 date, the reboot will be going up against another reboot; The Naked Gun, which is being led by Liam Neeson. Admittedly, those films are going for a different audience and should be able to co-exist just fine. The bigger issue might be director James Gunnโs Superman, which hits theaters a week earlier on July 11. On the other end of the superhero spectrum, Marvelโs The Fantastic Four is currently set to arrive the following weekend on July 25. Itโs a packed month, to be certain. But, as it stands, there is no direct competition from another major horror release.ย
Written by Kevin Williamson and rushed into production after Scream became an unexpected smash success, I Know What You Did Last Summer was one of the bigger success stories of the late โ90s slasher craze. Director Jim Gillespieโs flick pulled in $125 million globally, paving the way for two sequels. The surviving cast returned for 1998โs I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. 2006โs Iโll Always Know What You Did Last Summer featured a new cast.ย
More recently, Amazon tried to revive the franchise as a series, which debuted on Prime Video in 2021. It was short-lived, lasting just a single season. So, itโs back to the big screen for this one.ย
