NEON just dropped the first trailer for Enys Men, a brand-new slice of folk horror from director Mark Jenkin (Bait), and boy are we excited about everything going on in this footage. From the looks of things, Jenkin’s film will heavily scratch the same sort of itch that a number of our other folks horror favorites do – films like Midsommar, The Wicker Man, and even Kill List.
Here, see if you don’t agree:
See what I mean? A very British, very sinister island. Folks dressed up in anachronistic fits. An ominous score. Random shots of people reacting in horror to something just offscreen. Hell, they even shot this bad boy on 16mm to give it that deeply satisfying grainy look! We can’t wait to check this thing out!
Here’s an official synopsis, via the press release we received:
“A wildlife volunteer on an uninhabited island off the British coast descends into a terrifying madness that challenges her grip on reality and pushes her into a living nightmare. Evoking the feeling of discovering a reel of never-before-seen celluloid unspooling in a haunted movie palace, this provocative and masterful vision of horror asserts Mark Jenkin as one of the U.K.โs most exciting and singular filmmakers.โ
Yup, we’re into everything going on here. Now all we need is a release date! As of this writing, Mark Jenkin’s Enys Men will be along sometime next year, but that’s about all we know. Fear not, however: we’re very intrigued by the trailer and synopsis above, and will be keeping a close eye on this one going forward. Stay tuned for further updates on Enys Men as they roll in, gang!
