Alejandro Brugués is back with a new feature! After assaulting us with his “Hammer of Zanzibar” segment in the Satanic Hispanics anthology, Brugués is back on the big screen. This time he’s at the helm of The Inheritance, written by Joe Russo and Chris Lamont. Here’s a quick synopsis:
On the eve of his 75th birthday, billionaire Charles Abernathy invites his estranged children back home out of fear that tonight someone or something is going to kill him. He puts each of their inheritances on the line, to ensure they’ll help keep him alive.
Sure, Charles Abernathy, what could go wrong!? The Inheritance stars Bob Gunton, Peyton List, Briana Middleton, Rachel Nichols, Austin Stowell, David Walton, Resse Alexander, and Chris Wood. Cobra Kai fans will recognize Peyton List from her role as Tory Nichols, but List has been getting well acquainted with the horror genre over the last several years with roles in School Spirits, The Friendship Game, and Hubie Halloween.

Two billion dollars to keep Charles Abernathy alive? Fine, I’ll do it. Put me in, Coach. In a September 2023 interview with Michael Gingold, Brugués shared that the status of The Inheritance was unknown, “I wish I had a good answer, but I don’t. It’s not coming out on Netflix anymore, but they’re allowing us to sell it somewhere else, so we’re working on that. I hope it finds a good home.” It looks like it found the home they were looking for, thanks to Vertical, and we’re glad we’ll finally get to check it out this summer.

The Inheritance will be in select theaters and On Demand July 12.
