Exciting news today via the folks over at Variety: according to a new report at their site, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, Asteroid City) has joined the cast of The Last of Us in its second season, playing the same character he brought to life in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II. The massively popular HBO series is currently filming said season, with an eye towards launching the next batch of episodes in 2025.
Says Variety:
“Wright will appear in the role of Isaac, whom he previously played in The Last Us Part II video game. The character is described as ‘the quietly powerful leader of a large militia group who sought liberty but instead has become mired in an endless war against a surprisingly resourceful enemy.'”
As previously reported, the new season of The Last of Us will see the return of S1 performers Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Gabriel Luna, and Rutina Wesley. This time around, they’ll be joined by Wright, as well as Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Also in the cast? Catherine O’Hara, star of the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, who’ll be playing a role created just for the series.
The Last of Us arrived on HBO in January of 2023, and the response from both critics and fans of the Naughty Dog video game franchise that inspired the series were almost universally thrilled with the show. Stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey slipped perfectly into the roles of Joel and Ellie, and while the series was largely very faithful to the source material, it also took its time expanding the Last of Us mythology in unexpected ways.
Last year’s dual Hollywood strikes prevented the second season from getting in front of cameras as soon as many viewers might have liked, but filming is currently underway and, well, there’s a lot to look forward to here: readers who’ve played The Last of Us Part II know that this story’s about to get way, way, way darker, and the cast the show’s lined up for S2 is jam-packed with talent. As far as we can tell, the wait will end up being worth it.
Nothing further to report on The Last of Us season two at this time, but rest assured we’re keeping our ear to the ground for further updates and will have those in front of you just as soon as they pop up on our radar. Stay tuned, folks!
