Get your preferred caffeine delivery system ready and grab the popcorn, because Joe Bob Briggs is hosting an all-night movie marathon. Shudder has announced a new special titled The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon, which will premiere live on the streaming service later this month. This special will celebrate the conclusion of The Last Drive-Inโs sixth season, which debuted earlier this year. Itโs going to be a change of pace, in that, itโs going to be a long, dusk-till-dawn ride.ย
Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl will be celebrating six years of The Last Drive-In by hosting a six movie marathon. Yes, running in stark contrast to the format of The Last Drive-In season six, which has been one movie at a time, rather than double features, weโre getting not one but six movies in a row. Get those naps in and plan accordingly. The special premieres Friday, August 30 at 9pm ET on the Shudder TV and AMC+ TV feeds. It will also be available on demand on both platforms the following Sunday, September 1.ย
We’re calling it the NIGHTMAREATHON and it starts at dusk on Friday of Labor Day Weekend and goes to dawn and then it goes some more! Coming to you directly from the Talladega National Forest, where some of the residents are scarier than the bears! #TheLastDriveIn @kinky_horror pic.twitter.com/BHUAeiwGoi

Briggs and Darcy are promising a few surprise guests during the marathon. As for what the six movies will be? That remains the big question but, as always, anything is possible. One imagines it will be a mix of classics, rarities and hidden gems, precisely the sorts of films that this show enjoys highlighting. The show is produced by Matt Manjourides and Justin Martell, with Austin Jennings in the directorโs chair.ย
As a huge fan of Joe Bob Briggs and his brand of horror appreciation, this is exciting news to me personally. It calls to mind the original Joe Bob marathon on Shudder on that fateful July night in 2018 that crashed the streamerโs servers, paving the way for The Last Drive-In to exist in the first place. What was intended to be a fun one-off ended up turning into a semi-regular, live event that horror fans can rally around. In the age of on-demand and watching things when itโs convenient, that still feels special.ย
