Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel Let The Right One In is about to get a third retelling – this time thanks to a terrifying television series from Showtime.
The 2004 vampire love story was first adapted in 2008 by Tomas Alfredson, and follows bullied 12-year-old boy Oskar (Kåre Hedebrant) and his relationship with a centuries-old vampire named Eli (Lina Leandersson). In 2008, an American remake titled Let Me In saw Kodi Smitt-McPhee and Chloë Grace Moretz take up the respective roles.
Now, just in time for Halloween, Showtime’s Let The Right One In television series will hit streaming and on demand for all Showtime subscribers on October 7th. The series will make its on-air debut on October 9th at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
From what we can see from the trailer seen below, Let The Right One In breathes fresh life into the story of the young vampire, this time focusing on a father-daughter relationship and what it takes for a parent to provide for a bloodthirsty child.
The 10-episode series from Tomorrow Studios (Snowpiercer) stars Academy Award-nominee Demián Bichir (The Nun, The Hateful Eight) as dedicated father Mark and Madison Taylor Baez (Selena: The Series) as his 12-year-old daughter Eleanor who is just a tad more difficult than your average pre-teen – she drinks blood, for one.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Bichir had this to say about the upcoming show:
“This is the story of a father and his daughter and all the obstacles they have to conquer and overcome in order to keep themselves alive […] Mark’s daughter has been infected, so to speak, with a very, very strange and terrible virus, disease, however you want to call it. I’m saying [it like] this because, to me, this story goes beyond any vampire story. To me, this is about many other things that we’re actually experiencing. It’s about how difficult it is in any society for anyone to be different and to try to fit in.”
Fans of the original book or film will be pleased to know that it seems the new series hasn’t strayed far from its source material, and that the friendship between the two children that makes the story so special will still be found. Ian Foreman (Ordinary Joe) plays Isaiah, a young boy living next door to Eleanor and Mark. Showrunner Andrew Hinderaker explained that the pair form “a truly powerful and precarious friendship”, and from the trailer we can see that the two young actors are about to deliver a fangtastic (hehe) story to warm your heart over the chilly Halloween season.
The cast of Let the Right One In also includes Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls), Grace Gummer (Mr Robot), Kevin Carroll (The Walking Dead), Jacob Buster (Colony), Nick Stahl (Fear The Walking Dead), and Željko Ivanek (Heroes).
