If, when I had woken up this morning, a powerful wizard had materialized within my room and warned me that today would bring about an unexpected piece of casting news for the long-in-the-works Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptation (it’s a video game about being trapped in a Showbiz Pizza-style restaurant where bloodthirsty animatronics have come out to play), I would have had all kind of guesses as to who might now be attached to director Emma Tammi’s film.
Every one of them would have been wrong.
According to a new report over at Variety, Fried Green Tomatoes and Some Kind of Wonderful star Mary Stuart Masterson has joined the cast of Blumhouse’s forthcoming Five Nights at Freddy’s movie. Their report seems to contain no official confirmation on which role Masterson might be playing, but we’re willing to bet that it won’t be one of the bloodthirsty animatronics. As of this writing, we also know that Josh Hutcherson and the great Matthew Lillard will also be starring in the film, though it’s also unclear which roles those two might be playing.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is one of the more successful video game franchises of the past decade, a spook-a-blast type deal that seemed to capture the minds of an entire generation and which multiple studios, filmmakers, and writers have attempted to bring to the silver screen on multiple occasions. This version, with Tammi directing and Blumhouse producing, certainly seems to be getting much farther along in the production process than previous iterations of the film did, so here’s hoping it’ll make it over the starting line (and scare the shit out of us when it arrives).
Nothing further to report at present, but do stay tuned for further updates on Five Nights at Freddy’s as they become available.
