Modern horror master Mike Flanagan, of Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House fame, has launched a brand new podcast. What’s more, in doing so, he’s reviving something of a dying art in the form of the movie commentary track. Titled Directors Commentary, the show sees Flanagan talking to a filmmaker/filmmakers in each episode, then doing a commentary track them for one of their films. Flanagan took to Twitter to announce the show, saying the following:
“I’m so excited to introduce you all to Directors Commentary, my new podcast with Spectrevision Radio. In each episode, I’ll interview a filmmaker about their career, and then watch one of their films with them for a real-time watch-along commentary track that can be played with the film itself. Our first episode, featuring Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett… and their wonderful film Ready or Not. Listen on Spotify, Apple, or wherever you find your podcasts.”
The show is part of the recently launched SpectreVision Radio podcast network. That network also includes the new show from the hosts of Fango’s own The Kingcast, titled The Spiel, all about the films of Steven Spielberg. This is just the latest venture by SpectreVision, the company formed by Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah. The duo also launched the collectibles company Mutant earlier this year, utilizing the talents of many former Mondo employees.
“The idea of a podcast network that’s built like a community radio station is a natural extension of who we are,” Wood said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter about launching the network. “We’ve always thought of SpectreVision as a creative hub made up of like-minded people with shared interests. To have a space where creators can congregate to swap stories, share ideas and freely collaborate is a dream.”
Flanagan, meanwhile, does not seem like a man with a lot of free time on his hands to make a podcast. Yet, here we are. It was recently confirmed that he is, indeed, going to direct a new Exorcist movie for Blumhouse, which is due to hit theaters in 2026. He also wrote one of the segments in the upcoming V/H/S/ Beyond. That one is coming our way in October. This is to say nothing of his new Stephen King movie The Life of Chuck, which is in the can and awaiting release. The man stays busy, that much is certain. We’re better off for it, in my humble opinion.
