The Last House on the Left (1972)
Wes Craven's first film is acknowledged as a tough watch. "The Last House On the Left" is the story of two young women who go to see a concert and end up being kidnapped by a group of depraved killers, headed by genre star David Hess, a legendarily evil performance. They torture and murder the girls in a nauseatingly cruel scene, even by modern standards. One fan told of watching the film with their strict Catholic mother, and it did not go well. The ride home was very quiet.
The Human Centipede (First Sequence) (2009)
If you are familiar with "The Human Centipede (First Sequence)," you will know the film's premise. It's about a crazed German doctor who captures three people and sews them together in a way where they are like a centipede. Gross. But when a person told the story of their mother accidentally renting the film for their family movie night. Oh no. The parents don't like scary movies or gore, so they did not enjoy it. Laughs were had, but their mom never watched another horror movie until she accidentally rented another one.
Martyrs (2008)
Pascal Laugier's "Martyrs" is a film that even hardcore fans of the genre acknowledge is one of the more horrific films out there. So, it's not a scary starter movie for people unfamiliar with these types of films. A thoughtful father went shopping for his son, a fan, and picked up three films as a gift that "looked good." One of those movies was "Martyrs." The son was happy, but the father was less than impressed. Whoops!
Tusk (2014)
Kevin Smith's "Tusk" came from out of left field from this director who usually directed comedies. It's a dark body horror film about a man who gets turned into a walrus. Yes. Poor Justin Long. In one of the happiest stories on this topic, a son put off watching the film for several years, and one night, while scrolling through a streaming service, they found the movie on the "leaving soon" list. They watched it, and it became the basis of a running joke between them about the Fleetwood Mac song of the same name.
Faces of Death II (1981)
"Faces of Death" is a series of shocking alleged documentary films presented by an actor playing a pathologist. The person who told this story rattled off a list of movies they watched with their family, and "Faces Of Death II" was one of them. Since the film was a lot more shocking in the eighties when it became a sensation on home video, you would think that the mother would be more traumatized, but she wasn't, which was a surprise.
Saw (2004)
When watching "Saw" with your dad, remember to point out the movie's moral, and maybe things will turn out okay. A person who told of watching "Saw," a bloody film with human beings in traps, stated that his father liked the movie because he saw the more profound message about learning to appreciate your life and being grateful for every day. The Jigsaw Killer gets extra points for this.
The House That Jack Built (2018)
Lars Von Trier's films are divisive and shocking, even though they generally are not pure horror films. However, with "The House That Jack Built," Von Trier made a psychological horror film with a serial killer at its center. Did someone watch this movie with their grandparents? Yes, they did. How did it turn out? Pretty well, considering. The cinematic quality of the film and mainstream actors seem to have made a difference in the perception of the film.
Sinister (2012)
In a role reversal and something similar to the regular order of things, one fan admitted that they watched Scott Derrickson's "Sinister" when they were ten years old with their dad. The upshot is that they were so scared that they begged to sleep in their father's bedroom for the next week because of the lingering effects of their reaction to the film. It's a pretty strong recommendation for the film.
Poltergeist (1982)
Tobe Hooper's "Poltergeist" is frightening but isn't considered as extreme as other films on this list. However, there was a tale of a son who watched this film with their mother, and she hated it. It is not a comment on the film's quality, but many times when someone is uncomfortable with a scary movie or can't take it, that is a very normal reaction to a horror film. In this case, it's not one of the most horrifying films on this list, but for the right person, it was too much.
Mandy (2018)
On a happier note, Panos Cosmatos's "Mandy" is a beloved horror film considered a new classic. It is pretty violent and very creepy, wild, and strange. For one man's father, it represented a moment when a horror film finally got through to the dad. The son had shown him several films, hoping to find common ground, and nothing seemed to work. That was until they sat down together and watched "Mandy." The son finally found a film the father enjoyed and would admit he liked. Maybe it's not as funny as some of the other reactions, but it is heartwarming that "Mandy" and the Black Skulls did it for these two family members.
