Well, here’s an unfortunate bit of business: according to a report filed to Deadline Hollywood last night, Netflix has canceled Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar’s latest horror series, 1899, after just one season.
The pair’s previous collaboration with the streamer, Dark, ran for three seasons and was widely embraced by horror fans. To date, 1899 hadn’t generated that same level of buzz (and, presumably, viewing numbers), but then again: the series only debuted at the end of November. Of course it hadn’t.
Yesterday, bo Odar released the following statement, via Instagram:
This is just the latest genre series to get the axe from Netflix, and an extremely unscientific glance around social media indicates that fans are deeply annoyed to see 1899 snuffed out before it could find its audience (The streamer’s most recent genre cancelation prior to this was Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Club, but at least that series was given more than two months to build its fanbase). Again, this is all very unfortunate, not only for fans of Friese and bo Odar’s work, but also for genre fans in general.
Nothing further to report at this time, but we’re willing to bet Friese and bo Odar will find a home for their next project sooner rather than later. Stay tuned for that news, whenever it rolls in.
