Call me crazy, but I don’t think Alexandre Aja gets his due as one of our more reliable horror directors. Oh, sure, not every Aja jam has been a homerun, but when you’ve got credits like Crawl, Horns, High Tension, the Hills Have Eyes remake, and the ridiculous-yet-satisfying Piranha 3D to your name, you can afford to make the occasional Mirrors.

The last time we heard from Aja, it was with 2021’s Oxygen (you’ll have to decide which category that one belongs in; this writer has yet to see it), but now he’s back with a film called Never Let Go, and today brings us the film’s very first trailer. You will not be surprised to learn that it looks absolutely bonkers.

We’ll get to that trailer in a second. But first, let’s take a peek at the film’s official plot synopsis:

“In this new psychological thriller, as an Evil takes over the world beyond their front doorstep, the only protection for a mother, played by Academy Awardยฎ Winner Halle Berry, and her twin sons is their house and their family’s protective bond. Needing to stay connected at all times — even tethering themselves with ropes — they cling to one another, urging each other to never let go. But when one of the boys questions if the evil is real, the ties that bind them together are severed, triggering a terrifying fight for survival.”

Wait, what? “Tethering themselves with ropes?” Let’s take a look at that trailer…

Well, now! Doesn’t this look interesting! There seems to be a little Bird Box, a little A Quiet Place in Never Let Go‘s DNA: a mysterious apocalyptic event, strange creatures, a set of rules meant to keep one alive in the face of it all. We’re not entirely sure what the hell’s going on here, but we’re certainly very curious to find out!

As mentioned in the synopsis above, Never Let Go stars Oscar-winner Halle Berry, Percy Daggs IV and Anthony B. Jenkins. Written by Kevin Coughlin and Ryan Grassby, the film is produced by 21 Lapsโ€™ Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Stranger Things‘ Dan Levine. It’ll hit theaters on September 27th (mark your calendars!), and we can’t wait to check it out.

Nothing further to report on Never Let Go at this time, but rest assured we’ll keep you informed with further updates as they roll in. Stay tuned for those, folks, and – in the meantime – consider going back and revisiting one of Aja’s other directorial efforts (we’re particularly fond of 2019’s Crawl around these parts, but you do you).
