Beetlejuice is back, baby! After 35 years away from the silver screen, director Tim Burton has finally reunited with Oscar-winner Michael Keaton for the aptly titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Keaton isnโt the only one back in the saddle either as weโre also getting Winona Ryder as Lydia Deetz and Catherine OโHara as Delia Deetz. Plus, Wednesday and Scream star Jenna Ortega has boarded the cast as Lydiaโs daughter. A good cast is one thing, but does this movie have the goods? It may just be a trailer but this footage makes this sequel seem like the real deal, filled with old school practical effects and that certain brand of Burton magic. Check it out.ย
There is a lot of footage here to unpack. This is giving us an awful lot more than the first teaser trailer did, thatโs for sure. We get a much better sense of the story here, as well as Ortegaโs relationship to her family, which is challenged to say the least. The real selling point though is all of the crazy afterlife stuff, which really lets Burton settle into what he does best. The wild sets, the at times gross practical visual effects, itโs all here.ย
It certainly has some member berries vibes going on at times, with quite a bit of nostalgic imagery at play. Then again, thatโs to be expected. It is a sequel to a 35 year old film, after all. It very much looks like thereโs a new story to tell here, with much to explore.ย In addition to the trailer, we’ve also got a new poster that you can check out below. The synopsis for the sequel reads as follows:ย
โBeetlejuice is back! After an unexpected family tragedy, three generations of the Deetz family return home to Winter River. Still haunted by Beetlejuice, Lydia’s life is turned upside down when her rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid, discovers the mysterious model of the town in the attic and the portal to the Afterlife is accidentally opened. With trouble brewing in both realms, it’s only a matter of time until someone says Beetlejuice’s name three times and the mischievous demon returns to unleash his very own brand of mayhem.โ
New cast members include Justin Theroux (The Leftovers), Monica Bellucci (The Matrix), Arthur Conti (House of the Dragon), and Oscar nominee Willem Dafoe (Poor Things). Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Wednesday) penned the screenplay, working from a story they cooked up Seth Grahame-Smith (The LEGO Batman Movie).ย
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to hit theaters on September 6. For more, be sure to check out our breakdown of Loungflyโs new Beetlejuice collection.ย
