At long last, it sounds like a new Child’s Play movie is in the works. This, according to franchise creator Don Mancini, who has revealed that he is in the early stages of developing a new entry in the series. In an ideal world, this would be in addition to the Chucky TV show which is in the middle of its third season. Either way, it may finally be time for everyone’s friend till the end to grace the silver screen once more.
Mancini recently appeared on the Scream Dreams Podcast, which is co-hosted by scream queen Barbara Crampton. During the show he revealed, “I’m actually in the early stages of working on a new Chucky movie.” He didn’t say much of anything else about it but it’s worth remembering that Mancini said he would send Chucky to space if enough people want that to happen. Fingers crossed.
In any event, this is surely welcome news for longtime fans of the franchise. The last time any entry in the franchise graced the silver screen was in 2019 when the Child’s Play remake hit theaters. The last time a movie was released that Mancini was directly involved in was in 2017 when Cult of Chucky was released direct-to-video. In a recent interview with DJ Suss One, Mancini spoke a bit more about the new film, explaining that it would not be a reboot. Rather, it would exist alongside the show.
“I want to keep doing new movies and, in fact, I’m in the early stages of starting to develop one now, which is designed to work in tandem with the TV show. You know, the ongoing attempt to try to conquer the universe with Chucky.”
Remarkably, Mancini remains committed to keeping the franchise continuity intact. Dating back to the original Child’s Play in 1988, everything remains canon, save for the 2019 remake, which ended up being more of an “in addition to” rather than a full-on reset. Not many slasher icons can say they’ve lasted 35 years (and counting) without succumbing to a reboot.
As for what this movie could be? That’s difficult to answer. Any jokes about sending Chucky to space aside, the only downside of keeping the continuity together is having to find new, inventive ways to tell stories that can be inviting to new audiences while staying true to everything that has come before. We’ll have to wait and see what Mancini has in store.
Chucky season 3 returns on April 10 on Syfy and USA Network.
