Legendary British horror studio Hammer are back from the dead with Doctor Jekyll, a modern twist on the critically adored tale starring comedy-acting icon Eddie Izzard – and today’s brand new trailer teases a gorgeously Gothic nightmare.

Directed by Joe Stephenson (Chicken, McKellen: Playing The Partand), Doctor Jekyll marks the first release from Hammer following its acquisition by theater and entertainment mogul John Gore. The adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella looks a little like this…

An isolated mansion, a mysterious locked room, creepy corridors, a dusty cellar and a mad doctorโ€ฆ Hammer horror is back with a modern reimagining of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1886 novella โ€˜The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hydeโ€™. When ex-convict Rob takes the carer position to the infamous Nina Jekyll, little does he know heโ€™s part of an evil master plan devised by her alter ego Rachel Hyde. But to what lengths will Rob go to satisfy his clientโ€™s weird wishes and his own ambitions for the daughter he has never even seen?

Alongside Izzard, Doctor Jekyll also stars Scott Chambers (Alita: Battle Angel) and BAFTA-nominated acting stalwarts Lindsay Duncan (Birdman) and Simon Callow (Amadeus)

Stephenson teases that โ€œthe filmโ€™s tone is a (hopefully) surprising mix of dark humor and suspense that spirals into horror. Even in its darkest moments we give a wink to films of a certain era, and flashes of camp within a dark twisted fairytale combine to make a tone I donโ€™t see much of anymoreโ€ฆ and wish I did!โ€

Doctor Jekyll will receive its red-carpet premiere at Londonโ€™s iconic Odeon Leicester Square on October 11, and will then hit theaters just in time for Halloween on October 27. Don’t miss it – and don’t forget you can read our exclusive interview with Izzard in the latest issue of FANGORIA! Now, let’s meet Nina and Rachel…
