Even as we speak, a studio by the name of Digital Cybercherries is hard at work on Paranormal Tales, a found-footage horror game that looks to combine elements of Outlast, the V/H/S franchise, and maybe even a smattering of Skinamarink for good measure. If that sounds like something that’ll be utterly terrifying to play, well, we tend to agree!
As pointed out by the good folks over at Bloody Disgusting, Paranormal Tales revolves around a group known as the Horror Cam Archives Committee taking receipt of a number of video files which allegedly show the final moments in the lives of various folks who’ve gone missing. Each level of the game unfolds via a different video file, which players will have to navigate in order to solve the mystery of these disappearances.
Here’s their latest trailer, ominously titled “The Man Downstairs:”
Good lord. Anyone who had a problem making their way through Alien: Isolation or the Amnesia games is likely to have a complete meltdown while playing Paranormal Tales. Created via the Unreal Engine 5, the presentation here looks startlingly realistic. Imagine playing this through a set of VR goggles. Our stomach is in knots just thinking about it!
Says Bloody Disgusting:
“Players can expect to experience gameplay mechanics such as facial recognition, dynamic breathing, interaction with household objects, stumbling when sprinting, and of course the genre clichรฉ of jump scares. Paranormal Tales will take players through multiple locations and tales where nothing is safe. What may seem to be an ordinary lived-in house can suddenly turn into something more sinister for players that are brave enough to explore further.”
As of this writing there’s no word on when (or if) Paranormal Tales will be making its way to consoles – at the moment, it’s expected to arrive sometime this year via Steam – but we won’t be surprised if it ends up making that leap eventually. We’re excited to see what other locations are included here (if one of the files is set in an abandoned amusement park at night, we are fucked), and what other tricks this game may have up its sleeve.
