Kuyang (Indonesia)
One image you may recognize from Southeast Asian folklore is that of a floating, disembodied head with entrails dangling from its neck. This spirit goes by many names, but in Indonesia, it's known as the Kuyang โ and you can see it in all its gory glory in director Yongki Ongestu's film of the same name.
Kuyang centers around a couple who relocate to a remote village for work. As if moving wasn't stressful enough, they soon realize that something sinister wants a taste of their unborn child.ย
I'll be straight with you: there's not a whole lot of English-language press about this one, so take everything I've just said with a grain of salt. Discover the truth for yourself when Kuyang floats onto Netflix on July 11.
Project Silence (South Korea)
Did you want a side of action with your horror? Director Kim Tae-Gon has you covered with Project Silence, a disaster film that sees a group of survivors stranded on a fog-shrouded bridge.ย
What's so bad about that, you ask? Well, for one thing, the bridge is on the verge of collapsing. Oh, and the canine subjects of a secretive military experiment have broken free from their transport vehicle and are now subjecting the survivors to a series of relentless attacks.ย
Ready for the journey from hell? Buckle up and catch Project Silence in theaters from July 12.
Oddity (Ireland)
Writer-director Damian McCarthy got under my skin once with Caveat, his quietly unnerving debut feature that you can find streaming on Shudder. He's back to test my nerves again with Oddity. This paranormal horror film sees the owner of a curio shop attempting to solve her sister's murder with the help of a particularly unsettling wooden mannequin.ย
Oddity was shot in the same converted barn in County Cork where McCarthy filmed Caveat, and you may even spot a wee cameo from that movie's creepy toy rabbit in Oddity's trailer. Check out the film in theaters from July 19, then crack open the latest issue of FANGORIA for an interview with Oddity's star, Carolyn Bracken. Stay tuned for an upcoming online interview with director Damian McCarthy.
Starve Acre (UK)
Speaking of creepy rabbits, writer-director Daniel Kokotajlo's folk horror film Starve Acre features an especially unsettling one.
An adaptation of Andrew Michael Hurley's 2019 novel of the same name, Starve Acre is set in rural Yorkshire in the 1970s and stars Morfydd Clark (Saint Maud) and Matt Smith (Last Night in Soho). They play Juliette and Richard, a young couple living a seemingly idyllic life in the countryside until a tragedy drives a wedge between them. While Juliette's sister tries to provide comfort and support, Richard begins to obsessively dig (literally) into local legends concerning their land.ย
It's folk horror, so you know the drill: what once was buried shall return. Brush away the soil and catch Starve Acre in theaters and on VOD platforms from July 26.
The Beast Within (UK)
Game of Thrones' Kit Harington appears to be having a little trouble with lycanthropy in director Alexander J. Farrell's The Beast Within, a werewolf movie set deep in the English wilds.ย
Caoilinn Springall (recently seen in Stopmotion) plays Willow, a 10-year-old child who starts questioning why her family lives an isolated life in a fortified compound in the woods. When her curiosity gets the best of her, Willow follows her parents on one of their secretive late-night treks โ witnessing a horrifying transformation and becoming ensnared in a dark ancestral secret in the process.
The Beast Within howls into theaters on July 26. Just make sure it's not a full moon before you venture out.
The Last Breath (UK/Sweden)
Barely a month seems to go by without a new shark movie swimming onto the scene. July continues that trend with the release of The Last Breath, which adds a new twist on the formula by trapping its leads in the sunken wreckage of a World War II battleship. The film also features one of the final performances of the late Julian Sands.ย
The Last Breath comes to us from Scandi filmmaker Joachim Hedeฬn, whose previous flick, Breaking Surface, got an English-language remake called The Dive last year. That film also involved a diver rapidly running out of oxygen, so this is not Hedeฬn's first underwater rodeo. Find out if The Last Breath is equally as breathless when it swims into theaters and onto VOD platforms on July 26.
