You’ll love the new scary movies on Paramount+ in July. While the list is small, there are two distinct themes here. First, there are some people who are being cursed for doing things they shouldn’t. Sam Raimi’sย Drag Me to Hell explores that cinematic territory, as does Stephen King’s Thinner. ย Is there anything worse than having your life turn into a nightmare through magical means?
You can consider that question while checking out both of these films.
One of horror’s most charming and beloved psychopaths, Hannibal Lecter, is in the spotlight with the classic and Academy Award-winning film The Silence of the Lambs and the fifth film in the Hannibal Lecter film series,ย Hannibal Rising.ย You get to watch how Hannibal becomes Hannibal and his rise to fame.

Drag Me to Hell (2009) on July 1
Drag Me to Hellย is one of Sam Raimi's underappreciated films, and it's a shame. In a way, it's a throwback to classic horror films and the director's homage to scary movies of the past in which a woman makes the wrong choice and finds herself in danger.ย
A loan officer who evicts an old woman from her home finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.
The film stars Alison Lohman, Justin Long, Lorna Raver, Dileep Rao, David Paymer, and Adriana Barraza.

Stephen Kingโs Thinner (1996) on July 1
The second film on this list, in which a person who makes a terrible mistake and is cursed with a vengeance, comes from the novel written by Stephen King. Stephen Kingโs Thinner is about an obese attorney who is cursed by a gypsy to rapidly and uncontrollably lose weight. That's why you never should do naughty things in the car.
Directed by Tom Holland (Child's Play, Fright Night), this spooky tale of supernatural revenge stars Robert John Burke, Joe Mantegna, Lucinda Jenney, Michael Constantine, ย Kari Wuhrer, and Daniel von Bargen, with a cameo by King himself. The film was not well received upon it's release by critics, but here's your chance to see if they were correct.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991) on July 1
Never miss the opportunity to watch the only horror film to date to have ever won the Academy Award for Best Picture and one of the only films to have ever won all five of the major categories, including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Jonathan Demme's masterpiece, The Silence of the Lambs, stars Jodie Foster, Anthony Hopkins, Scott Glenn, Ted Levine, Anthony Heald, Brooke Smith, and Kasi Lemmons, with cameos from Roger Corman and George Romero.

Hannibal Rising (2007) on July 27
Another underappreciated film, this time in the Hannibal Lecter film series, is Hannibal Rising. Based on the book by Lecter creator Thomas Harris tells the story of what happened to young Hannibal after the death of his parents during World War II.ย The nascent serial killer moves in with his beautiful aunt and begins plotting revenge on the barbarians responsible for his sister's horrifying death.
This tale of revenge stars Gaspard Ulliel, Gong Li, Rhys Ifans, Dominic West, and Richard Brake. It was directed by Peter Webber, who also directed the gorgeous The Girl With the Pearl Earring.ย Hannibal Risingย is a film full of gruesome events that look beautiful. It also has the advantage of the casting of genre favorite Richard Brake in a smaller role.
