We’ve been extremely excited for Bomani J. Story‘s The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster since catching the trailer last month, and are even more excited now we’ve got some brand new key art for the sci-fi horror.
The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster stars Laya DeLeon Hayesย (The Equalizer),ย Denzel Whitakerย (Black Panther) andย Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead), Reilly Brooke Stith (Orange Is the New Black), and Keith Holliday (Genius). The story is a modern-day take on the timeless Frankenstein tale:
Vicaria is a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. Inspired by Mary Shelleyโs Frankenstein, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster thematically challenges our ideas of life and death.ย Bomani J. Story, the film’s writer and director, crafts a thrilling tale about a family that, despite the terrors of systemic pressure, will survive and be reborn again.
The new poster is giving us all the good sci-fi vibes, with a suitably Shelley-style ominous tagline teasing (warning?) that ‘Death can be cured.’ In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Story spoke about just exactly what the classic Gothic horror means to them as a director:
“After I read it, I just knew there was so much here to interpret and adapt that hadn’t been tapped… I didn’t know how I wanted to do it, I just knew that it needed to be done. I knew if I could capture even two percent of the anxiety that Mary Shelley gave me while reading it, then I would be in a very solid place.”
The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster hits theaters, VOD and on Digital on June 9 (so get that date in your diary ASAP) and enjoy the official poster below:
