We recently shared an exclusive clip from Brian Duffield’s (Spontaneous) No One Will Save You ahead of its premiere. The new alien/home invasion thriller is now exclusively streaming on Hulu, and Duffield stopped by to chat about The Twilight Zone, the existence of extraterrestrials, finding a creative partner in Kaitlyn Dever, worst-case alien scenarios, and his new release. Duffield jokingly refers to this as “the Peloton of movies” because of the intense, action-packed pacing, but it’s a pretty accurate descriptor for the relentlessness. Nailing the tone required a re-cut to fine-tune the film, and Duffield landed on it successfully. Though we would be very curious to see the pre-FX alien-free cut, just for funsies.

The King himself sang Duffield’s praises, tweeting “You have to go back over 60 years, to a TWILIGHT ZONE episode called “The Invaders,” to find anything remotely like it.”

And it’s true, the mostly dialogue-free landscape Duffield drops us into as Kaitlyn Dever’s Brynn fights for her life is a uniquely horrifying journey. The sound design and creation of a new, alien language posed its own set of challenges, but it all paid off. In case you’re unfamiliar, here’s an official synopsis.

Brynn Adams (Kaitlynย Dever), is a creative and talented young woman whoโ€™s been alienated from her community. Lonely but ever hopeful, Brynn finds solace within the walls of the home where she grew upโ€”until sheโ€™s awakened one night by strange noises from decidedly unearthly intruders. What follows is an action-packed face-off between Brynn and a host of extraterrestrial beings who threaten her future while forcing her to deal with her past.ย

Duffield’s small, intimate character study brings the end of the world to an unlikely protagonist, “rudely bursting the bubble our character has spent years building and cultivating.” But she’s not having any of it.
