Another one for your ever-lengthening Halloween watchlist: Blumhouse’s feminist horror thriller Run Sweetheart Run will hit Amazon’s Prime Video service on October 28th.
Run Sweetheart Run is the latest film from director Shana Feste (The Greatest, Boundaries) and stars Resident Evil’s Ella Balinska as a young mother on a date from hell.
The official synopsis for Run Sweetheart Run reads:
Initially apprehensive when her boss insists she meet with one of his most important clients, single mom Cherie (Ella Balinska) is relieved and excited when she meets charismatic Ethan (Pilou Asbæk). The influential businessman defies expectations and sweeps Cherie off her feet. But at the end of the night, when the two are alone together, he reveals his true, violent nature. Battered and terrified, she flees for her life, beginning a relentless game of cat-and-mouse with a bloodthirsty assailant hell-bent on her utter destruction. In this edge-of-your-seat dark thriller, Cherie finds herself in the crosshairs of a conspiracy stranger and more evil than she could have ever imagined.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Feste revealed that Run Sweetheart Run was inspired by a terrifying real-life encounter she had on a date with a man in her early 20s.
“That night was terrifying and illuminating,” she says. “People that I didn’t think were going to help me did help me, and the people I thought were going to help me didn’t really help me so much as they could have. It was almost — what happened on foot, going back to my house — worse than what happened on the date.”
Since premiering at Sundance 2020, Run Sweetheart Run has been garnering positive praise for its feminist messaging. Our friends over at Nightmarish Conjurings described the horror-thriller as a “multi-layered and very personal portrait of a woman in danger and a bold feminist statement of women’s lot in life and the inherent danger of being a woman that society frequently glosses over.”
Alongside Balinska, Run Sweetheart Run also stars Shohreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog), Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones), Clark Gregg (Captain Marvel), Dayo Okeniyi (Fresh) and Betsy Brandt (Breaking Bad). Alongside Feste, the film was co-written by Keith Josef Adkins and Kellee Terrell.
