One of the releases we’re most looking forward to this year is the 20th anniversary, 4K restoration of Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy. Headed to theaters this August thanks to the good folks at NEON, this is a movie many of us never got to see in theaters, and now we’ll get to see it looking better than ever … and possibly alongside audience members who’ve never seen it before and have no idea what they’re in for.
What could be better than that?
NEON just sent along the poster above, which they’re calling the Oldboy 20th Anniversary Poster. Obviously, it’s a very simple design that doesn’t tell us much about the film itself, but – as implied in that opening paragraph – maintaining the secrets of Oldboy for first-timers is one of the most important responsibilities for any Oldboy fan. Imagine spoiling Oldboy for someone. Couldn’t be us.
Starring Choi Min-sik (in a powerhouse performance that really must be seen to be believed), Kang Hye-jung, and Yoo Ji-tae, Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy is a ferocious neo-noir brain-melter. It might not be a horror film in the traditional sense, but trust us when we say that it is, in fact, very horrifying, and that if you’ve never seen it you need to rectify that soon – preferably on August 16th, when the restored/remastered 4K version of Oldboy hits theaters.
Stay tuned for more on the 4K restoration of Oldboy as further updates roll in, folks.
