THE BLUE ROSE

We’re big fans of Leigh Janiak’s Fear Streetย trilogy, so when we sawย Fear Street‘s Olivia Scott Welch starring in a “genre-bending surrealist noir” we smashed that play button on the trailer so hard. I know it says “surreal” right there in the description, but I was not prepared for how gorgeously and wonderfully weird this would be. Before we get to the trailer, here’s a quick synopsis.

A genre-bending surrealist noir set in the 1950s, THE BLUE ROSE follows the one-night journey of two rookie detectives as they set out to solve a seemingly clear-cut homicide, only to find themselves in an alternate reality of their worst nightmares.

The Blue Rose has made its rounds on the festival circuit, playing at the likes of Frightfet, Panic Fest, and Salem Horror Fest, and now it is officially on our radar. Described as a “Horror, Drama, Noir, Thriller, Mystery” starring Olivia Scott Welch (Fear Street Trilogy,ย Shithouse), George Baron (who also directs), Danielle Bisutti, Nikko Austen Smith, Glume Harlow, Jordyn Denning, Evee Bui, Sophie Cooper, Logan Miller, and Twin Peaks‘ Ray Wise.

At this point, it’s reductive (and usually inaccurate) to refer to something as “Lynchian,” but aside from the overall Lynch vibes, Twin Peaks fans will be familiar with “blue rose cases.” Ray Wise popping up only doubles (triples?) down on it all. We’ll see what’s in store at The Blue Roseย when it hits select theaters and Digital on July 12.
