Not even a day since we bought you the news that Maggie Gyllenhaal’s alleged Bride of Frankenstein remake was rumoured to be heading into production in March, Deadline have today confirmed that not only is the project official, BAFTA-winning and Academy Award-nominated star Annette Bening (American Beauty, Nyad) has joined the cast.
Bening joins a rumoured cast of Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz and Peter Sarsgaard, with Deadline reporting that Buckley is billed as star.
Deadline also report that the fresh take on Frankenstein lore will find its home with Warner Bros., who “are looking to build upon the studio’s track record with female filmmakers” (understandable, given the success of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie last year!)
A logline reads:
A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.
According to ProductionList.com, Cruz is playing the bride Myrna, Bale is Frankenstein, and Sarsgaard playing a detective. Who Buckley and Bening are playing remains to be seen, and it’s worth taking the character news with a pinch of salt given that nothing has been officially confirmed.
The currently untitled movie is being produced by Emma Tillinger Koskoff (The Joker, The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street), Gyllenhaal, Talia Kleinhendler (The Lost Daughter), and Osnant Handelsman-Keren (The Lost Daughter). EPs are Courtney Kivowitz (The Lost Daughter) and Carla Raij (Maestro, The Fablemans).
Personally, we can’t wait to welcome in another addition to the Frankennaissance – we’ll have more updates for you as they roll in.
