Bong Joon-ho’s (The Host, Parasite) new sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 will hit theaters internationally on March 29, 2024, Warner Bros. announced yesterday. A teaser trailer was also released, revealing star Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) in what looks to be some kind of cryogenic tube.
The film will be loosely based on the novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, but according to Deadline, Bong’s version “might ultimately be different from the novel” due to the Oscar-winning director’s past experiences with adaptations. The novel’s plot synopsis reads as follows:
Mickey7 is an Expendable: a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. Whenever thereโs a mission thatโs too dangerousโeven suicidalโthe crew turns to Mickey. After one iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his memories intact. After six deaths, Mickey7 understands the terms of his dealโฆand why it was the only colonial position unfilled when he took it.
Alongside Pattinson, Steven Yeun (Nope), Naomi Ackie (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac) will also star. The film also boasts an impressive crew behind the camera, including Oscar-nominated director of photography Darius Khondji (Okja), Oscar-nominated production designer Fiona Crombie (The Favourite), Oscar-nominated editor Jinmo Yang (Parasite), costume designer Catherine George (Okja, Snowpiercer) and visual effects supervisor Dan Glass (The Matrix franchise).ย The soundtrack is from Squid Game composer Jae-il Jung.
Unfortunately, like Rob here, we can’t put ourselves in a sci-fi sedation and hurry to 2024, but here’s the official teaser trailer to keep you going:
