The good folks over at IGN have uploaded the first 11 minutes of Deep Silver and Dambuster Studios’ Dead Island 2, the highly-anticipated and long-in-the-making sequel to its wildly successful 2011 game, Dead Island. From the looks of things, not much has changed since the last time we were slashing zombies to ribbons with electrified machetes and leaping betwixt buildings!
Take a look (and, yeah, this one’s age-gated, so you’ll need to click through):
As you can see, the player’s character (Ryan, one of several playable characters the game has to offer) awakes in the fiery wreckage of an aircraft and must A) heal a pretty nasty wound, B) escape his burning environment, and C) meet up with a handful of other survivors (including Emma, a “Romero” award winning celebrity) before getting into some good ol’ fashioned zombie slashing.
As pointed out by the good folks over at Bloody Disgusting, that zombie slashin’ offers us our first look at Dambuster’s FLESH System – the name they’ve given to the mechanic which will allow players to target specific enemy body parts. Wanna cut a zombie’s legs out from under ’em? Hack ’em all the way down to the bone? Dead Island 2 will let you do that, and boy does it look good doing it.
Whereas the first Dead Island took place on the fictional island of Banoi, Dead Island 2 takes place in sunny California. Throughout the game, players will travel between various points in the state (including Los Angeles and San Francisco), ridding the game world of the undead with a variety of improvised and upgradable weapons and gory first-person combat. I have very fond memories of playing my way through the first game in this series, and can’t wait to dive into this sequel.
So, when can we play it? Very soon! As we’ve previously reported, Dead Island 2 will arrive on the Epic Games store, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PlayStation 4 and, yes, PlayStation 5 on April 21st. Grab your machetes and meet me out in the digital streets of LA, folks!
