One of the horror projects we are most interested in here at FANGORIA is Maggie Gyllenhaal’s forthcoming The Bride!, a retelling of The Bride of Frankenstein starring Christian Bale, Annette Bening, Jessie Buckley, Penélope Cruz, Julianne Hough, and Peter Sarsgaard.
Set in 1930’s Chicago, the film has only just begun filming…but Gyllenhaal took to Instagram today to reveal both Bale and Buckley’s looks in the film (as Frankenstein’s monster and The Bride, respectively), and well, well, well: this is looking very interesting, indeed.

Buckley appears to have a somewhat less severe appearance than Bale here (check out those giant, gnarly staples in his forehead!), though it’s possible there’s more to her design than we can see in the photo embedded above.
According to an official synopsis…
“[The Bride!] sees a lonely Frankenstein travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”
Recently, The Bride! moved into the October 3rd, 2025 release date previously occupied by Matt Reeves’ sequel to The Batman, which…well, that’s quite a ways from now, so we’re probably gonna be waiting a while before we see much more from Gyllenhaal’s film, but we’re intrigued by what we’re seeing here and certainly can’t wait to find out what else this production has planned.
