What an excellent day for (fans of) an exorcism! Hot off the brand new trailer for David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer comes the announcement of a title and release date for the second movie in the Universal, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek planned trilogy.
The second film, The Exorcist: Deceiver, will hit theaters on April 18, 2025.
In case you missed the plot synopsis (based on a story created by Green, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride) for the film that’ll kick off the trilogy, here it is to remind you:
“Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom, Jr.) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett,ย Good Girls) on his own. But when Angela and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn).”
Yep, you read that right: Ellen Burstyn will be reprising her role as Regan MacNeil’s mother, Chris, which officially makes The Exorcist: Believer a sequel to William Friedkin’s 1973 possession classic. Whether Linda Blair herself will make a surprise appearance is yet to be seen when the supernatural horror hits theaters on October 13 – just in time for Halloween!
As for the final entry into the trilogy, we’re hoping Green carries on this -er naming trend right to the end. The Exorcist: Retriever? The Exorcist: Saturday Night Fever? The Exorcist: Justin Bieber? Whatever it is, we’re there.
