Grab your boomsticks – a spin-off of Sam Raimi’s iconic The Evil Dead is soon to rise, with Deadline reporting today that rising French filmmaker Sébastien Vaniček is set to co-write and direct for Raimi and Robert Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures.
Deadline notes that plot details are under wraps, as are cast and release details.
Vaniček’s feature debut, Infested, won Best Picture and Best Director in its North American premiere at Fantastic Fest (and anyone doubting Vaniček’s chops should know that the film contained REAL SPIDERS, so he’s clearly not adverse to freaking audiences out to the max!)
The as-of-now untitled spin-off will be the latest in the Evil Dead franchise following the massive success of Lee Cronin‘s Evil Dead Rise last year, which also had Ghost House Pictures behind it – as did Fedé Alvarez’s 2013 Evil Dead remake. If those two are anything to go by, we have full faith in just how terrifying Vaniček’s spin-off is going to be.
So, will we see a return of any past characters? Probably not. The Evil Dead icon himself, Bruce Campbell, has already hinted a little about what kind of of direction we can expect any new franchise entries to go in…
“From this point forward, [the Evil Dead films] kind of have to stand on their own. Which is fine. And liberating […] We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
We’ll have more updates for you on this exciting Deadite development as and when we get them – keep your eyes peeled!
