Our brains are melting just glancing at this list, we’re almost afraid to look at it straight on. Let’s do it together, consequences be damned. Fantastic Fest is back and we are READY! The opening of the press release was enough to give us goosebumps, have a peek as a little Friday morning treat:

Mechanophilia, possessed nuns, possessed children, hallucinations, ghostly hauntings, time travel, exorcism, cerebral expansion, heavy metal, friendship, yakuza, canine trauma,ย multipleย serial killers, coprophagia, cannibalism, tender embraces, vampires, copious bodily fluids, superheroes, warm laughs, disco-dancing firemen and more, more, more!ย

Yes, this can only mean one thing:ย Fantastic Fest is back.

After 18 months of isolation and uncertainty, this yearโ€™s โ€œPost-Apocalypticโ€ edition of Fantastic Fest is here to remind us of the joy of cinema, community, and weird and wonderful movies.ย

Not sure what we’re most excited for, but really wishing we hadn’t googled “coprophagia”. Julia Ducournau’s 2021 Palme Dโ€™Or winner Titane kicks off the festival with a bang and a promise of “A poignant study on loneliness, isolation and gender identity wrapped in a constantly surprising world of body horror, muscle cars, violence, and disco-dancing firemen.” The muscle car madness does not stop there, the opening night party will be an all-out tribute to the visuals of Titane, replete with muscle cars, metallic and French firefighter costumes encouraged.

There will also be Mondo Records Titane giveaways as they celebrate ten years, epic sidebar programming including a celebration of Lars Nilsen and Kier-La Janisseโ€™s epic tomeย WARPED AND FADED: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive, Grady Hendrix and Chris Poggiali debuting their new book These Fists Break Bricks: How Kung Fu Movies Swept America and Changed The World, and Master Of The Flying Guillotine with live commentary by RZA.

After each day’s movie screenings, the Highball promises “eight days of raucous parties โ€” live music, karaoke, 100 Best Kills, Fantastic Feud, Scripts Gone Wild, TriviaDome, Nerd Rap, feasts, games, disco-dancing firemen and more, more, more…”

โ€œWeโ€™re thrilled at how the program is coming together,โ€ says Fantastic Fest Director of Programming Annick Mahnert. โ€œFor this Post-Apocalyptic edition, weโ€™ve scoured the four corners of the globe to find weird, silly, terrifying, entertaining and fantastic movies directed by established and emerging filmmakers. Opening this yearโ€™s fest with a Palme dโ€™Or winner from a Fantastic Fest alum is a real treat. As always, we also try to find unforgettable repertoire titles, and we couldnโ€™t be happier about hosting the US Premiere of the new restoration of Andrzej Zulawskiโ€™s Posession. This first wave is but the tip of the iceberg and we cannot wait to unveil the rest of the program to y’all!โ€

And now, may we present… the Fantastic Fest 2021 first wave of programming!
