We’ve been waiting excitedly for the next entry into the Ghostbusters franchise ever since it was teased in a post-credits scene of 2021’s Afterlife – and today filming has finally begun!
The official Ghostbusters Twitter account shared a snap from the first day of filming, showing director Gil Kenanย (Monster House, Poltergeist) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife director Jason Reitman who is producing the upcoming sequel. The clapperboard refers to the film’s current working title Firehouse, which is of course a reference to the iconic base of the original Ghostbusters.
As we previously reported, Kenan is – understandably – extremely excited to be bringing the next instalment of the beloved franchise to life:
โItโs an absolute honor to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga. I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a Ghostbusters film.โ
Ernie Hudson is said to be reprising his role as as Winston Zeddemore, with Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, and Carrie Coon also expected to return in the Afterlife sequel.
Back in 2021, Ghostbusters: Afterlife made an impressive $200M worldwide on the back of its $75M production budget, marking a hit for Sony and proving that as long as there’s ghosts, we’ll be tuning in to see ’em busted.
Ghostbusters: Firehouseย is slated to arrive in theaters on December 20th, 2023, so mark your calendars for more ectoplasmic excitement this winter!
