A while back, we learned that Osgood Perkins (the director behind The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel) was gearing up for a new film by the name of Longlegs, and that none other than Nicolas Cage would be playing a major role in the film. At the time, Cage called it a “possessed Geppetto” movie, which was more than enough to get us excited.
We haven’t learned much about Longlegs in the time since, but today brings us two major updates on the project. For starters, Maika Monroe (The Guest, It Follows) has joined the film’s cast. A newly-released plot synopsis brings further good news: she’ll be playing an FBI agent tasked with tracking down Nic Cage’s serial killer character, who must be the “possessed Geppetto” the actor mentioned previously.
Here’s that synopsis, via Variety:
โFBI Agent Lee Harker (Monroe) is a gifted new recruit assigned to the unsolved case of an elusive serial killer (Cage). As the case takes complex turns, unearthing evidence of the occult, Harker discovers a personal connection to the merciless killer and must race against time to stop him before he claims the lives of another innocent family.โ
Oh, yes. That will do very nicely, indeed. Based on Cage’s previous comments and the synopsis above, it sounds like his serial killer character (perhaps the titular Longlegs?) is a doll-obsessed killer who hears voices – that oughtta give Cage plenty of scenery to chew on. Having Monroe’s character hot on his heels (and connected to him in some way?) is just a bonus. Consider our tickets sold for this one, Perkins!
Filming on Longlegs is currently underway in Vancouver, which means we’ll probably be hearing more about this one sooner rather than later. Please stay tuned for further updates on Osgood Perkins’s latest as they roll in!
