If you don’t know the names “Michael and Daniel Philippou,” well, you’re about to. The Australian brothers have spent no small amount of time building an audience on YouTube (where they post short films under the joint name of RakkaRakka), and back in January they debuted their first-ever feature film at the Sundance Film Festival. Called Talk to Me, the Philippous’ supernatural horror film racked up a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes on its way to being picked up for distribution by the good folks at A24.
It’s good. Real good. And now, thanks to a new report over at Bloody Disgusting, we can tell you when it arrives. Says Bloody:
“A24 recently acquired the hot Sundance horror title Talk to Me, and weโve learned today that theyโll be releasing the Australian horror movie wide in theaters on July 28, 2023.”
For those just hearing of Talk to Me, the film tells the story of a group of friends who come into possession of an embalmed, severed hand that allows them to interact with the dead. Naturally, they do what any teenagers might do in this situation: they film themselves using it and post the results to social media, where the group’s antics quickly gain a rabid following. Trouble is, communing with the dead is a dangerous business, and before too long all the fun and games come to a screeching halt. And then? Well, you’ll just have to see the movie.
The film, which stars Sophia Wilde, Miranda Otto, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Djanjiย andย Zoe Terakes, is an absolute blast, and positioning it right in the middle of the summer seems like a great idea. Talk to Me is legit scary but also packs quite a few laughs, feeling more like a film made by a seasoned pro rather than a feature debut. We’re not betting types here at FANGORIA, but if we were, we’d put our chips on this one being a big deal once it lands in theaters.
Thankfully, July 28th isn’t that far away! Stay tuned between now and then for any further Talk to Me updates worth sharing (we’re particularly excited to get a look at the film’s first trailer). We’re eager for all of you to get a look at this one!
