A new Fear Street movie is in the works from Watcher director Chloe Okuno, Above the Line have exclusively reported.
The first three Fear Street movies – based on R.L. Stine’s book series – were directed and co-written by Leigh Janiak. Netflix released the trilogy last year over the course of two weeks and proved to be a summer horror hit for the streaming service. It is unknown as of now whether Janiak will return to the franchise, although in an interview with IndieWire, the director expressed interest in creating a ‘horror Marvel Cinematic Universe’ out of the Fear Street world.
The series is set over the span of several decades (each film subtitled Part One: 1994, Part Two: 1978 and Part Three: 1666 respectively) and follows a group of teenagers taking on an evil force that has plagued their town of Shadyside for centuries.
The original trilogy starred Kiana Madeira (She Never Died), Sadie Sink (Stranger Things), Fred Hechinger (The Woman in the Window) and Maya Hawke (Stranger Things). Whether or not any of them will return for the fourth instalment is unknown, although a few have expressed interest in returning.
Chernin Entertainment will produce the new entry into the franchise as they have the previous three features.
Okuno’s psychological thriller Watcher released earlier this year to positive reviews, currently holding an 87% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Okuno is also the mastermind behind Storm Drain, V/H/S/94‘s breakout segment that blessed us all with a new creature icon in the form of Raatma. Earlier this year, she directed the finale of Showtime’s Let the Right One In television adaptation. With such a solid filmography already under her belt, we’re confident that if anyone can bring the fear back to Shadyside, it’s her.
