We’ve been waiting to hear more on the follow-up to Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong for quite some time now, and today brings us an interesting new update: a brief teaser trailer announcing the film’s official title. As it turns out, all of our best guesses (Godzilla vs. Kong 2, 2 Godzilla 2 Kong, Godzillakong vs. Kongzilla, Godzilla vs. Kong: Day of the Soldado) were all way off the mark.
Take a look…
Yes, that’s right: the sequel to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong is … Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. We’re guessing that the use of “x” here rather than “vs.” is meant to imply that Godzilla and Kong will be collaborating this time around, which seems to be the case based on the film’s official synopsis:
“This latest entry in the Monsterverse franchise follows up the explosive showdown of Godzilla vs. Kong with an all-new cinematic adventure, pitting the almighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal undiscovered threat hidden within our world, challenging their very existence โ and our own. The epic new film will delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins, and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”
Sounds like there’s gonna be a lot going on in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which (in case you weren’t already aware) is bringing back Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard, along with Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall and Bryan Tyree Henry.
This one opens on March 24th of next year, which means it’s probably gonna be a while before we get any further details regarding the plot or have a trailer to share, but rest assured we’ll be monitoring the Monarch Radio airwaves for any updates. Stay tuned for those as they roll in, MonsterVerse fans!
