The good folks at Empire Magazine are in the process of rolling out their big 2024 preview, and today they’ve got our very first look at Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, a remake of F.W. Murnau’s massively influential 1922 vampire film of the same name. How’s it look? Creepy, moody, and elegant – pretty much exactly what you’d expect from the director of The Witch and The Lighthouse.
Take a look…
In addition to the first look image above, Empire’s also got a bit of commentary from Eggers about what we can expect from his version of Nosferatu, which stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgรฅrd, and Nicholas Hoult. For starters, Eggers promises it’s gonna be “scary” (“I do think that there hasnโt been an old-school Gothic movie thatโs actually scary in a while. And I think that the majority of audiences will find this one to be the case”).
He also says Skarsgรฅrd completely transformed himself for the role:
โIโll say that Bill has so transformed, Iโm fearful that he might not get the credit that he deserves because heโs justโฆ heโs not there. He felt like honoring who had come before him. Itโs all very subtle. But I think the main thing is that heโs even more a folk vampire. In my opinion he looks like a dead Transylvanian nobleman, and in a way that weโve never actually seen what an actual dead Transylvanian nobleman would look like and be dressed like.โ
Sounds good to us! Head on over to Empire Magazine to read more of Eggers’ thoughts on his forthcoming vampire tale, and stay tuned for more on Nosferatu (which, yes, is headed to theaters next year) as further updates roll in. We’re extra hyped for this one!
