According to a very surprising press release we just received here at FANGORIA HQ, Peacock has announced a straight-to-series order for Crystal Lake, an “expanded prequel series” taking place before the events of Friday the 13th.

At the helm: Hannibal creator and Queer For Fear executive producer Bryan Fuller, who will also serve as the showrunner of the series. A24, Marc Toberoff, Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian will also executive produce.ย

All details regarding the series are currently being kept under wraps (naturally), but it sounds like the folks behind this series are just excited to begin working on it as we are to see it. Says Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming:

โ€œFriday the 13th is one of the most iconic horror franchises in movie history and we were dying to revisit this story with our upcoming drama series Crystal Lake. We canโ€™t wait to get to work with Bryan Fuller, a gifted, visionary creator who Iโ€™ve had the pleasure of being a longtime friend and collaborator, along with our incredible partners at A24, in this updated version for Peacock that will thrill long-standing fans of the franchise.โ€ย ย ย

Adds Fuller:

โ€œI discovered Friday the 13th in the pages of Famous Monsters magazine when I was 10 years old and I have been thinking about this story ever since. When it comes to horror, A24 raises the bar and pushes the envelope and Iโ€™m thrilled to be exploring the camp grounds of Crystal Lake under their banner. And Susan Rovner is simply the best at what she does. Itโ€™s a pleasure and an honor to be working with her again.โ€ย

Given the quality of Fuller’s previous shows (including Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, and Dead Like Me), we suspect we’re in good hands here, and can likely look forward to Fuller’s razor-sharp writing alongside some truly surreal imagery. There’s no telling where Fuller might take this thing, and that is very exciting, indeed.

Nothing further to report on Crystal Lake at this time, but we imagine the horror community is already exploding with speculation, various demands, and the stone-cold relief of having more Friday the 13th lore headed our way. Stay tuned for further updates on this one as they roll in, and – in the meantime – go ahead and get your camping gear all packed up (do not forget the sleeping bag you will invariably be killed in).
