It’s been a few years since Steven Spielberg was working in “alien mode,” but a new report at Variety suggests that the wait for his next extraterrestrial picture might be over! Buried within the trade’s report on the indefatigable work ethic of “ageless auteurs” like Spielberg and Martin Scorsese is the following tidbit:
“For his part, Spielberg, 77, is also staying busy. He will likely make his next project a UFO film based on his own original idea. David Koepp is writing the screenplay, sources say.”
Spielberg’s alien movies tend to fall into two distinct categories: awe-inspiring and uplifting (E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) and pants-shittingly terrifying (War of the Worlds). As you can see, Variety’s report doesn’t indicate which tone Spielberg will be working with here, but of course we’re hoping for the latter…especially since Koepp was a co-writer on War of the Worlds.
Aliens and UFO’s have long been a favorite topic of Spielberg. Just last year, he executive produced a limited Netflix series by the name of Encounters, and prior to that he produced both Taken and Falling Skies. Years prior to that, he almost made another “mean aliens” movie by the name of Night Skies. It’s exciting to learn that he’s turning his attention back to this particular on the big screen, and we’re dying to learn more.
Nothing further to report at this time, but do stay tuned for further updates on Steven Spielberg’s untitled UFO movie as they become available.
