Update: As per THR, this is a done deal. Chris Landon (Freaky, Happy Death Day) will direct, and Radio Silence will return as exec producers.)
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s Scream VI hit theaters earlier this year and promptly earned nearly $170M at the worldwide box office, proving beyond any doubt that this long-running slasher franchise still has plenty of blood left in it. But despite its runaway success, we’ve heard precious little about a Scream VII in the months since.
With Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett off making their “untitled monster movie” for Universal, bringing them back for Scream VII would mean hitting pause on the franchise’s next installment for … well, for more time than Paramount would likely be willing to wait! But if not them, who?
Our pals over at Bloody Disgusting may have the answer:
“While Scream VII hasnโt yet been officially announced by Paramount and Spyglass, we can confirm that itโs definitely in the works. Weโve also been paying close attention to the recent rumors that Radio Silenceโs Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett wonโt be back to direct Scream VII, and that Christopher Landon (Happy Death Day, Freaky) may take over.”
Yes, according to BD, Happy Death Day and Freaky director Chris Landon is in talks to direct Scream VII. He’d be a great pick for this particular franchise, a director who’s proven himself adept at juggling horror and comedy and a true-blue slasher fanatic who certainly knows how to subvert that sub-genre’s tropes. If this is who’s taking over for Team Radio Silence, we’ll be very happy, indeed.
Of course, nothing’s set in stone quite yet. BD’s report stresses that Landon has been in talks, but as of this writing it sounds like the deal has not been made official. As such, we advise you to stay tuned for further updates as they roll in (and, y’know, maybe keep your fingers crossed; we’d really likely to see this pairing come together)!
