Get ready for some all-out, animated monster goodness as we’ve got a brand new trailer for Netflix’s Skull Island. The animated series will take place within the MonsterVerse, which includes such films as Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla vs. Kong. Unlike those movies, however, it doesn’t necessarily cost more to put more monsters on screen when doing animation, so it appears the creators went absolutely nuts with this one, as Kong is truly just the tip of the iceberg here. Check it out.
So yeah, needless to say, those who enjoy monster shenanigans are going to have no shortage of things to enjoy here. Some of these monsters look familiar, such as the Skullcrawlers, while others look totally new. The specifics of the human plot still seem a little mysterious, though it appears to concern two disparate groups of stranded explorers seeking something important. We’re certainly getting a lot more here than we did with the previous, very brief teaser trailer (which you can watch right here, if you please). Netflix has released the following synopsis for the show:
“A new chapter in Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise, Skull Island is a thrilling animated adventure series that follows shipwrecked characters desperate to escape the most dangerous place on Earth—a mysterious island home to prehistoric monsters, including the greatest titan of them all, Kong.”
The human ensemble includes Nicolas Cantu as Charlie, Mae Whitman as Annie, Darren Barnet as Mike, Benjamin Bratt as Cap and Betty Gilpin as Irene. Brian Duffield (Cocaine Bear) created the series and also serves as writer and executive producer. Jacob Robinson, Brad Graeber, Jen Chambers and Thomas Tull additionally serve as executive producers.
Fortunately, those who enjoy what the MonsterVerse has to offer have much more to look forward to than just this animated series on the horizon. For one, this isn’t even the only TV show set in this cinematic universe currently in the works. Apple TV+ has a live-action series on the way, with Matt Shakman (WandaVision) directing. There’s also a new movie on the way next year from director Adam Wingard that will serve as a sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong. While plot details largely remain mysterious, the movie is officially titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Skull Island hits Netflix on June 22.
