At last year’s Fantastic Fest, I (along with my THE KINGCAST co-host, Eric Vespe) had the distinct honor of hosting the world premiere of King on Film, a brand-new documentary from filmmaker Daphnรฉ Baiwir. Featuring a murderer’s row of King collaborators (Baiwir got everyone for this, from Mike Flanagan to Frank Darabont to Mick Garris to … you get the idea) spilling their guts about America’s reigning Master of Horror, it’s the sort of thing any King fan will go crazy for.

And, hey, good news: according to a new report over at Deadline, everyone’s gonna get a chance to see it! Says Deadline:

“Dark Star Picturesย has snapped up North American rights to the Stephen King documentary King on Screen, examining cinematic adaptations of the iconic authorโ€™s works, out of EFM. The film from actress-turned-director Daphnรฉ Baiwir, which bears Kingโ€™s stamp of approval, will hit theaters in late summer, with a digital release to follow in the fall.”

Says Dark Star Pictures President, Michael Repsch:

โ€œDaphnรฉ has done a spectacular job of showcasing the talented filmmakers who brought the work of Stephen King to life in moving images. As a lifelong King fan, I could not be more excited to bring this film to audiences across North America and have it as a part of the Dark Star family.โ€

I really cannot say enough good things about Baiwir’s film. Talking-head horror docs are a dime a dozen these days, and so many of them feel like they were cobbled together within a single afternoon. King on Screen feels like it was built from the ground up by a gen-yoo-wine Stephen King mega-nerd (just wait’ll you see the opening 15 minutes or so), and the quality of the guests Baiwir was able to score for interviews is very much a cut above what you’d normally get from this sorta thing. If you’re a King fan, trust me – you’re gonna love it.

We don’t have a specific release date yet, but rest assured that we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for updates on that front, and that we’ll have ’em here for you on FANGORIA just as soon as they come onto our radar. Stay tuned, folks!
