One of the best horror sequels of all time (yes, I said it) is getting a much-deserved 4K upgrade in just a few months. The folks at Scream Factory have announced a 4K Ultra HD release of The Exorcist III, which is due out in March. While the movie has been readily available on Blu-ray for some time, this ensures it will be preserved in the highest resolution possible for physical media junkies out there, myself included. And, given the increasing volatility in the streaming landscape, physical media has proven time and time again that it still has great value.

For the time being, new bonus features have not been announced for the forthcoming release, but Scream Factory ensures that information will be forthcoming. We do, however, have some cover art, which you can check out below. Additionally, those who pre-order a copy from the company’s website will get an 18×24 poster featuring the original theatrical artwork. The new release will retail for $39.98, but it is currently listed for $34.99. For those who may be unfamiliar with the film, or perhaps just need a refresher, the synopsis reads as follows:

“For more than fifteen years, Police Lieutenant Kinderman (George C. Scott) has been haunted by the death of his friend Father Damien Karras. Now, on the 15th anniversary of the exorcism that claimed the priest’s life, Kinderman’s world is once again shattered when a boy is found decapitated and savagely crucified. It’s just the beginning of a nightmare series of bizarre religious murders. When a psychopath claiming to be the infamous Gemini Killer admits responsibility for all the murders, Kinderman is confronted with a horrifying truth that he cannot begin to explain … the man does know intimate details that only the true killer could possibly know. There’s only one problem … the Gemini Killer died in the electric chair fifteen years ago!”

The film was directed by William Peter Blatty, the writer of the novel that inspired the original Exorcist. This sequel, unlike the much-maligned Exorcist II: The Heretic, was viewed as his original vision for the adaptation of his novel, Legion. Luckily, this new 4K release will indeed include his director’s cut, subtitled Legion, which is more in line with what Blatty had in mind, compared to the theatrical cut.

This is a movie that has so much going for it. For one, it features a stellar supporting performance from Chucky himself, Brad Dourif. We also have what is arguably the single greatest jump scare in cinema history (not to overstate things), which we will now have the chance to witness in glorious ultra HD. What a time to be alive.

The Exorcist III in 4K arrives on March 28. Those interested can pre-order a copy now at ShoutFactory.com.
