HBO is gearing up to begin production on The Last of Us season 2, and they’ve lined up an impressive list of directors to tackle the sophomore outing of this beloved post-apocalyptic series. While there will be a few familiar faces behind the camera for the second season, four new filmmakers have been added to the roster as well.

According to Deadline, Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones), Nina Lopez-Corrado (Supernatural, Perry Mason), Stephen Williams (Westworld, Watchmen) and Kate Herron (Daybreak, Loki) are all set to direct new episodes of The Last of Us. They’ll join returning directors Peter Hoar, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. Hoar helmed the first season’s most acclaimed episode, Long, Long Time. Mazin, meanwhile, serves as an executive producer and showrunner alongside Druckmann, who was the creative force behind the video game that inspired the show.

Last year’s dual Hollywood strikes prevented the show from moving forward into its second season as quickly as HBO would have liked. But the network has wasted no time in getting this train moving down the tracks since the strikes resolved. Aside from the directors, the show has also been casting up by adding several key roles, including Young Mazino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina and Kaitlyn Dever as Abby. The cast is led by Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie.

The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. The first season centers on Joel, a hardened survivor, who is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. It starts as a small job but soon becomes a brutal and heartbreaking journey across the U.S. Plot details for the second season have largely been kept under wraps but it will undoubtedly be taking cues from The Last of Us Part II, which was released for the PlayStation back in 2020. But HBO is looking to stretch the story of that game across multiple seasons.

The cast also includes Gabriel Luna (Tommy), Anna Torv (Tess), Nico Parker (Sarah), Murray Bartlett (Frank), Nick Offerman (Bill), Melanie Lynskey (Kathleen), Storm Reid (Riley), Merle Dandridge (Marlene), Jeffrey Pierce (Perry), Lamar Johnson (Henry), Keivonn Woodard (Sam), Graham Greene (Marlon) and Elaine Miles (Florence).

The Last of Us season 2 will premiere on HBO in 2025.
