It’s been a handful of years since Xenomorphs have had any screen time, but that figures to change in the not-too-distant future. As we learned earlier this year, director Fede Álvarez, of Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead fame, is set to direct a brand new Alien movie. Though official updates on the project have been a bit quiet, we now have a pretty significant one that promises things are moving swiftly in the right direction. It appears the movie is coming together behind the scenes and is actually set to begin filming in early 2023.
According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance website, the movie, currently going under the title of Alien: Romulus, is set to begin filming on February 6, 2023. It remains to be seen if that title will stick. Pre-production is already said to be underway, with production due to take place in Budapest, Hungary. Unfortunately, no plot details or anything of the like were revealed in the production listing. But, if cameras truly do begin rolling in just a couple of months, we will surely be learning more sooner rather than later.
When last we heard, Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Uprising) looked to be gunning for what we presume is a leading role in the film. The other key thing here is that Ridley Scott, who directed the original sci-fi/horror classic that started it all, is on board to produce the film. Other than that, it looks like this will be made to go straight to Hulu, much like it was done with the Predator prequel, Prey, earlier this year.
It’s worth noting that this is expected to be a standalone adventure in the franchise. This will not be a sequel to 2017’s Alien: Covenant, which left us with a pretty big cliffhanger that, in all likelihood, will never be resolved. Aside from the new movie, an Alien TV series is also in the works for FX from Noah Hawley, with Scott also producing.
The new Alien movie does not yet have a release date set.
