It’s been quite some time, but True Detective is coming back for a fourth season to help ring in the new year. Rather than air on HBO, the new season, titled True Detective: Night Country, will be premiering on the Max streaming service. Today, we’ve not only got a brand new trailer for the long-awaited return of the beloved show, but a premiere date has also been announced to go along with the new footage. Mark your calendars for January 14, 2024 and plan accordingly. In the meantime, check out the trailer.
As horror lovers will care to note, none other than Silence of the Lambs star Jodie Foster is front-and-center in the new season, which is one heck of a hook as is. We’ve also got a snowy setting, which is a new one for the show. Three seasons in, we’ve yet to have anything so Fargo-esque. Fans of the show may also notice that there is a pretty explicit reference to the first season of the show. This has, historically, been an anthology series, with each season separate from the last. So it’s interesting that we may be establishing some continuity here. The synopsis for the new season reads as follows:
“When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the eight men who operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
Issa López, of Tigers Are Not Afraid fame, will be driving the ship this time around as creator Nic Pizzolatto only appears to be tangentially involved. López was very busy as sher serves as showrunner, writer, director and executive producer for the entire series. No pressure. Foster is also on board as an executive producer alongside Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, Mark Ceryak, Mari Jo Winkler, Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Goli, Richard Brown, Woody Harrelson, Matthew McConaughey, Cary Joji Fukunaga and Pizzolatto. Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Cathy Tagnak Rexford and Sam Breckman are on board as producers.
The very impressive ensemble also includes Kali Reis, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, Isabella Star Lablanc, Aka Niviâna, Anna Lambe, Joel D. Montgrand, Christopher Eccleston and John Hawkes.
True Detective: Night Country premieres January 14, 2024 on Max.
