Over the weekend, the good folks at Shudder unleashed the latest installment in the long-running V/H/S franchise, and based on the press release we just received from our favorite horror streamer, a whole shitload of people tuned in to watch it.
Take it away, press release!
“Shudder Original Film V/H/S/99 — the fifth installment in Studio71โs blockbuster V/H/S film franchise and the second to premiere exclusively on Shudder since the streamer revived the franchise last year — debuted to record numbers in its opening weekend.ย Through its first four days of release, the film registered 28% more unique viewers than the previous record holder, V/H/S/94, which premiered on Shudder in 2021. V/H/S/99 also accounted for nearly 22% of all on-demand streams on Shudder during the same time period and was AMC+โs #1 most watched movie of the weekend.”
Shudder’s General Manager, Craig Engler, had the following to say:
โBy every metric V/H/S/99 has been a wild success, with subscribers watching in record numbers and debating with each other on social media about which segment of the anthology was their favorite. We are thrilled that the revival of the series continues to be embraced by our audience, and already looking forward to next yearโs V/H/S/85.”
Of course, many of us at FANGORIA also checked out V/H/S/99 over the weekend, and this writer was ultimately impressed by how consistent the quality was across the chapters of this particular entry. Of course all anthology films are gonna have their highs and lows, but V/H/S/99 struck me as one of the stronger installments, particularly the segments directed by Flying Lotus (“Ozzy’s Dungeon”) and Vanessa and Joseph Winter (“To Hell And Back”).
Up next (and mentioned by Engler above) is V/H/S/85, which will tackle the horrors of the Me Decade via directors Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone), David Bruckner (the recent Hellraiser), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky) and Mike P. Nelson (the genuinely great Wrong Turn). We can’t wait to see what this crew comes up with, and will keep you informed on the update front as we work towards that film’s 2023 debut. Stay tuned!
