Today brings us a few solid updates on Christophe Gans’s recently-announced Return to Silent Hill, a brand-new, feature film installment in the franchise that Gans himself launched all the way back in 2006. Heretofore we’ve had very little to go on in terms of the film’s official plot, which characters would be in it, or who’d be starring, but now we know the answer to all of those questions.
Let’s start with the headlining cast members! According to Deadline, Return to Silent Hill will star Jeremy Irvine (Steven Spielberg’s War Horse) and Hanna Emily Anderson (Jigsaw, X-Men: Dark Phoenix). What will they be getting up to in the very cursed world of Silent Hill? Here’s that plot synopsis:
“The film will follow James (Irvine), a man broken after being separated from his one true love (Anderson). When a mysterious letter calls him back to Silent Hill in search of her, he finds a once-recognizable town transformed by an unknown evil. As James descends deeper into the darkness, he encounters terrifying figures both familiar and new and begins to question his own sanity as he struggles to make sense of reality and hold on long enough to save his lost love.”
Yup, that certainly sounds like a Silent Hill plot! A shattered relationship, a mysterious summons to Silent Hill, a town grotesquely transformed, unreliable sanity levels … there’s no mention of Pyramid Head here, of course, but that’s fine. We all know he’ll be in there, swinging that big-ass sword around as sweatily as possible.
Here’s what Gans has to say about the film:
โReturn to Silent Hill is a mythological love story about someone so deeply in love, theyโre willing to go to hell to save someone. I’m delighted to have the wonderful talents of both Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson take us on this journey into a psychological horror world that I hope will both satisfy and surprise fans of Silent Hill.โ
Meanwhile, producer Victor Hadida confirms that Return to Silent Hill will deliver all-new creature designs:
โChristophe and I have been working closely with our partners at Konami, as they update the video game, to also create a version of Silent Hill for the theatrical audiences of today. You will still find the iconic monsters โ but there will also be new designs. We are confident that this new film and Konamiโs updated game together will propel the franchise forward for years to come.โ
Nothing further to report on Return to Silent Hill at this time, but we’re psyched to see this franchise getting another at-bat and will of course be keeping our eyes peeled for any updates on this one as it works its way through production. Stay tuned for those, Silent Hill fans!
