Apologies to Yellowjackets fans who have been eagerly awaiting a resolution to the cliffhanger ending we were left with at the end of season 2 as the wait for season 3 is not going to be brief. It has been confirmed that the new season of the much-acclaimed Showtime series won’t be arriving until 2025. Make your peace with that fact now and plan accordingly.
The news comes from Deadline, with the outlet explaining that last year’s Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes held up the production. The dual strikes shut down Hollywood for months as writers and actors went to war with Hollywood studios and streamers over new contracts. Yellowjackets season 3 was impacted as the writer’s room had to be shut down just as it was getting underway. Things are back on track now but that several-month delay pushed the new season out of 2024 and into 2025.
Showtime debuted the series back in late 2021 and the audience has noticeably increased in the years since. Season 2 concluded in May of last year, leaving many questions that needed answering. Fortunately, the premium cable network was quick to renew the show for a third season and, undoubtedly, they had hoped to have it on the air sooner rather than later. The world had other plans.
Yellowjackets centers on a team of high school girls soccer players who survive a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series takes place across two different timelines, chronicling their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later.
The series was created and is executive produced by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. The impressive ensemble cast is led by Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci and Tawny Cypress. Warren Kole, Ella Purnell, Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Thatcher, Sophie Nélisse, Steven Krueger and Jasmin Savoy Brown also star. Hanratty recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about season 3 and, while she hasn’t seen any scripts yet, she has an idea of where things are headed.
“The first year is this chaotic mess. The second year was almost this creepy stillness of winter. And now, it’s like the defrosting; the meltdown. We might be entering into another season, I’m thinking possibly spring. The snow will melt and our messes will show. That’s what I’m thinking.”
