The director of Backcountry is finally back with a brand new movie, which has just kicked off filming. Adam MacDonald has started production on his latest feature, Out Come the Wolves, with filming taking place in Ontario as we speak, according to Variety. The project is getting underway just as the producers are looking to sell international rights at the Cannes Film Market.

Enuka Okuma penned the screenplay, and as for the story at hand? The survival thriller โ€œfollows the story of a woman who takes her fiancรฉ to a secluded cabin to meet her best male friend, before things take a dark turn during a hunting trip.โ€ Secluded cabins and dark turns? Say no more! MacDonald, it turns out, has been trying to get this one made for some time. The director had this to say about it in a statement:

โ€œOut Come the Wolves had a long gestation period. Weโ€™ve been dreaming of this project for nearly a decade and it was beginning to feel like our own Fury Road. Now weโ€™re finally on the ground running with the support of High Park Entertainment and others. With the incredible creative team assembled, we have the recipe for something truly groundbreaking. My goal is to bring everyone to the very edge of their seats til the very last frame, to push the limits as far as possible.โ€

Back1

The cast for the film is led by Missy Peregrym, who previously collaborated with MacDonald in 2014โ€™s Backcountry. Not for nothing, that made-for-very-nothing bear movie rules, for my money, and you should seek it out. I digress. The ensemble also includes Joris Jarsky โ€œ(Godโ€™s Country) and Damon Runyan (Star Trek: Discovery).

While international rights have yet to be sorted out, IFC Films and Shudder will be handling distribution in the U.S. So this one should be very accessible in North America come time for release. MacDonald, meanwhile, has been staying busy since his 2017 feature Pyewacket. He directed several episodes of the series Slasher and worked with Eli Roth on Be Mine: A VR Valentineโ€™s Slasher. But this seems to be a real passion project for him, making it one worth keeping an eye on.

Out Come the Wolves does not currently have a release date but is expected to arrive in late 2024. Stay tuned.
