We’ve been looking forward to Andrew Cumming’s Out of Darkness (previously titled The Origin) ever since learning about it earlier this year. That hype only grew following the film’s strong performance at Fantastic Fest back in September, and has now reached a fever pitch with the arrival of a brand-new trailer.

Take a look at this:

Yes, Out of Darkness offers up a very particular horror flavor, one that rarely (if ever!) comes around: Paleolithic horror. Set 45,000 years in the past and featuring a cast of characters speaking an entirely fictional language, Cumming’s film looks like a unique, chilly way to spend a few hours in a theater.

Here’s an official plot synopsis (via Bloody Disgusting):

โ€œA small boat reaches the shores of a raw and desolate landscape. A group of six have struggled across the narrow sea to find a new home. They are starving, desperate, and living 45,000 years ago. First they must find shelter, and they strike out across the tundra wastes towards the distant mountains that promise the abundant caves they need to survive. But when night falls, anticipation turns to fear and doubt as they realize they are not alone.โ€

Andrew Cumming’s Out of Darkness stars Safia Oakley-Green,ย Chuku Modu,ย Kit Young,ย Iola Evans,ย Luna Mwezi,ย Arno Luening,ย Rosebud Melarkeyย andย Tyrell Mhlanga. They’re all working from a screenplay by Ruth Greenberg, and we fear for the safety of all of their characters. Whatever’s stalking these folks across that tundra can’t be good.

Out of Darkness (which is currently sitting at a very solid 94% on Rotten Tomatoes) hits theaters on February 9th. Stay tuned between now and then for further updates.
